Dizziness

The muscles responsible for opening the Eustachian tube share the same nerve supply as one of the muscles that moves the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). When the jaw muscles become overloaded, the nervous system can become “blocked” and inadvertently activate the muscles that open and close the Eustachian tube — even when this function is not needed. This unnecessary pressure equalization inside the ear may manifest as dizziness or a sense of imbalance.

During TMJ physiotherapy, we release the tension in the jaw muscles using soft tissue mobilization techniques. By applying gentle, circular pressure both externally and intraorally, we relax the affected muscles, followed by TMJ-specific exercises. We help restore the joint’s natural resting position, preventing further overload of the jaw muscles. As the muscle tension decreases, the frequency of dizziness typically reduces as well.
