Problems affecting the temporomandibular joint are becoming increasingly common. The primary symptoms are pain and/or restricted movement. The pain typically affects the area around the ear but may radiate into the teeth, head, or different regions of the face. Speaking, chewing, and yawning may become painful, often accompanied by clicking in the jaw joint. The cause is — based on our current knowledge — multifactorial, which is why the term temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is used to classify these conditions. The field of gnathology deals with the management of TMD, where one of the key professionals of the multidisciplinary team is the physiotherapist.
Our course introduces the causes and types of TMD, the steps of temporomandibular joint assessment, treatment planning, and the indications and contraindications of various physiotherapy techniques. Participants will also learn about the dental management of patients with TMD and how it intersects with physiotherapy, presented by members of the gnathology team. The training places strong emphasis on experiential, hands-on practice of theoretical knowledge. After completing the course, participants will be able to independently assess TMD patients, establish differential diagnoses, provide physiotherapeutic treatment, and involve the appropriate specialist when necessary.
